A "Current Affair" - My Love of Endless Pool

TRAIN

Yes, it's true. I really do love the Endless Pool! Now that I've had the opportunity to use it a lot and put it through some seriously hard paces, I'm really seeing its value in several important ways: first, it's a great way to train: swim easy, swim hard, work on your kick, do short sprints, long pulling sets, drills, drills and. . . did I mention drills?

Swim, Bike, Snowshoe!

in Group Training

Recently the Running Fit team headed up to Traverse City for a record attendance snowshoe race.  Once again, the Bigfoot (runsnow.com) was a crowd pleaser!

I had a blast trompin’ through the snow. Beautiful trails, good company and great post race chili!  Check out this great article from the Grand Traverse Insider Chasing Bigfoot about one group that also shared this awesome experience out in the woods!

Nuun Active Hydration

in hydration

When it comes to hydration, triathletes are forced to become chemists over night. They know exactly what the powder to water ratio is needed to make their sports drink taste the best; but the powders can be messy and fairly time consuming. Well there is a way to eliminate the powders and all the prep time of mixing bottles; it is called Nuun.

Nuun, pronounced ‘noon’, is a sugar-free electrolyte-enhanced sports drink tablet that keeps you optimally hydrated wherever you are.

Lift Things Up and Put Them Down

The off season is a great time to build strength.  Sometimes it is a challenge to fit it in with the swimming, biking and running but well worth the effort.  Weight training will

Annual Training

Now is the best time of the "season" to be making your annual training and racing plans.  If you haven't done so yet, sit down this weekend and, at a minimum, figure out your "A" races/events you plan to do.  This is for several reasons: 1. You need to start laying out your training blocks, i.e.base,build,taper,race.   2. Many of the popular events sell out early, so if that event is important to you; you better get in now to ensure your spot.   This sport has taken off in the past few years and many events that you could sign up the month before are now selling out 6-12 months in advance or within minutes of registration opening.

If the fin fits. . .

in gear, purposeful, swim, swimming, training

Now that people are starting to really get serious about their training, or are starting to formulate their training plans for the upcoming season, they are also starting to buy equipment. Everyone at RF truly does care that you are pleased with your stuff and that you get the RIGHT stuff, regardless of sport. I was very glad to have had considerable input in the order of swim training gear and accessories that arrived here at RF-West. We have the complete kit--everything you need--in the Novi and Ann Arbor-West stores, and it's GOOD!

Today I'm going to talk about just one very important piece of gear: fins. Fins? Yes, fins.

If the shoe fits

in picking running shoes, running fit, triathlon footwear, Triathlon shoes, zoot shoes

Out of all the equipment for training and racing nothing is more individual than the shoes we chose. For every person who loves a shoe there is someone that hates it, so much for science.  What this mean is, only you can chose your shoe and all the ads and hype won’t help much, it will take trying on a bunch of shoes. I’ve been selling running shoes for 25 years and my advice is to buy a shoe that fit’s and feels perfect right out of the box. Put them on, run a few yards and most times you will know instantly. If it feels stiff, it is, if the collar seems high and rubs you, it does, if the toe crease hits you wrong, it does.

The Good The Bad and The Ugly of Triathlon Training

Swimming, biking and running have been a part of my life for several years.  I have fallen in love with the triathlon lifestyle and all the good, bad and ugly aspects of it.  In the end it is all good in my opinion

Hold me, Squeeze me!

in compression

Compression was first introduced to help diabetics improve their circulation and now endurance athletes are the latest people to jump on the compression wagon.  Compression gear started to surface at Ironman and other endurance events four or five years ago and in 2010 in exploded.

Breaking Away!!!

Last week I broke away from my regular routine of riding my bike trainer in front of my TV, pumping my legs to my inspirational collection of Golden Girl’s DVD’s. Yeah, I know, talk about quality training!

Instead, I pumped 'em at the new bike training night at Running Fit headquarters.
